Dr CARLING-JENKINS (Western Metropolitan) — I rise today to speak about the International Parliamentarians for West Papua group, or IPWP, which I have recently joined. This is a cross-party group of politicians from around the world that is growing in number and supporting self-determination for the people of West Papua. The right to self-determination was violated by the undemocratic and unjust act of free choice in 1969. Ever since, the West Papuan people have been subjected to not just political and cultural oppression but in fact some of the most horrible human rights abuses imaginable. Benny Wenda, West Papuan independence leader currently living in exile in the United Kingdom, has written to me saying:
By joining IPWP, you have shown that there are people in this world who care for those in West Papua which inspires hope in my people that change will come.
I take this opportunity to urge all parliamentarians to support the plight of West Papuans and to join in the efforts of the IPWP to help West Papuans achieve the right to democratically decide their own future in accordance with international standards of human rights, the principle of international law and the charter of the United Nations.
